They've been fighting for centuries to maintain their culture, language, identity, and, for quite a while, sovereignty; they're not going to be terribly happy if the al-Qaeda trainer they ship in takes one look at the women's multihued garb and informs them that they must wear the traditional Arab <i>jilbab</i> or else they shall burn in hellfire forevermore. I'm surprised that this many indigens converted at all; the only way I can see Islam spreading widely among the Maya is if some sort of "72 Virgins of Guadalupe" event were to occur, which would give Islam the necessary native credentials. “Which people, the recent converts to Islam?”
