Michelle Obama: My Babies Daddy, Barack Obama

In this YouTube video Michelle Obama calls Barack Obama her “babies daddy” or her “baby’s daddy” but according to Salon and the Urban dictionary that is a racist slur.

Nice try. However, the slur is “baby daddy”, not “babies (or babies’) daddy”, which does not have an entry in Urban Dictionary. According to definition three, the phrase “baby daddy” is applicable regardless of the number of children involved. Moreover, the context makes it abundantly clear that she was providing a warm, informal introduction, in which “babies’ daddy” is an acceptable (and expectable) replacement for “children’s father”. The FOX chyron, however, has no such exculpatory context; indeed, its context is that it appeared on an anti-Obama network, while talking about smears of Obama’s wife. Moreover, it occurred in the form that is quite unambiguously a single lexical unit, as opposed to an innocuous genitive construction.

As for Urban Dictionary, as with all sources it must be taken with a grain of salt, but it is nonetheless a treasure trove for the study of the English language as it is right now.

She’s not saying “Babies’ daddy,” listen closely. Also, “babies” is the plural of baby, Barack is the daddy of two babies, hence “babies daddy”

Is it racist? Salon and The Urban Dictionary say so.

“She’s not saying ‘Babies’ daddy,’ listen closely.”

What she says is /mɑ.ʹpebɪz.ʹdædiˑ/. This can be orthographically represented as “My baby’s daddy”, “My babies daddy”, or “My babies’ daddy”. As Michelle Obama is presumably aware of the fact that she has two children, it cannot be the first. The phrase “babies daddy” is unattested except for as a misspelling of “baby’s daddy”, and its existence cannot be said to be implied by “baby daddy” because that term is attested in reference to both the father of a single child and the father of multiple children. It would also violate the rules of English word formation, as the morpheme occurs only word-finally (”baby daddy” is written with a space, but functions as a compound word). It also does not make sense either semantically or stylistically, as she is obviously not trying to insult Obama and that level of extreme informality would be inconsistent with the friendly informality that characterized the rest of what she said. It therefore cannot be the second. This leaves the third.

But this also is Michelle’s first effort, as Democratic wife, to come to grips with coiling all the fingers towards the center of the palm with the thumb.

Don’t forget she told a cheering crowd in February: “For the first time in my adult life, I’m proud to live in a labyrinth of grim corridors lined with terrorist-fist-jabs.”

Trying hard to pin this on her – too hard. The fault is not with Michelle, but with Megyn and Malkin and the folks at FOX.

    Period.

Look, it’s OK if you don’t want to vote for Obama, that’s your business. You get to decide on whatever basis you choose to use. But trying to make up reasons after the fact isn’t fooling anybody, ya know?

    obamesque,

I do know, and you can rest assured that I won’t make up any reasons after the fact on why I didn’t vote for a particular candidate.

(btw, Megyn? Who’s that? Michelle Malkin I know… but I don’t recall anything pertinent she said about Michelle Obama’s racial slur… anyway, FOX wasn’t the source of the audio, but even it FOX did provide the coverage it’s not up to them what Michelle Obama says… unless you’re implying that FOX somehow pulls the strings of their puppets, Barack and Michelle Obama… is that what you’re trying to say?)

    Hey Mr P!
The crazy thing is that we are given a plethora of iambic pentameter.

I hope I spelled that right.

    ps.
I agree with what Sergei said.

Hello vermontdave, how have you been? Have you seen this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/konservo/2557104610/ ?

Anyway, it’s close to iambic pentameter. But as Rev. Wright (Obama’s spiritual adviser and mentor) would tell us, iambic pentameter is the European’s way of oppressing African and African-American rhythm.
