The Islamic holy month of Ramadan is being celebrated in Iraq as:
a victory over terrorism amid an overall drop in violence across the country.
In Pakistan Ramadan merits:
a suspension of military operations
but Sergei doubts that the Taliban will “honor” this suspension.
Coincidentally, it’s been a full year since I started this blog by asking the question “Why do Liberals hate life?” In that post the Left-wing propaganda site “Think Progress” was swarming with commenters who wished U.S. citizens would fall victim to terrorist or insurgent attacks in Iraq, only then, they say, will “reality come home.” Disgraceful. Well, now that the Bush and McCain backed surge strategy of Gen. David Petraeus has paid off in spades and the Iraqi Sunnis have joined with the good guys, it’s nice to know that the morbid thoughts of people, like those who frequent Think Progress, are about as far from reality as those of terrorists like Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida.
Not only has the violence in Iraq subsided, but al-Qaida’s unholy jihad against Westerners and so-called mushrikeen governments (e.g. Saudi Arabia, according to OBL) has, for the most part, been subdued. It is also important to recognize that there is no justification for exaggerating the connection between religion and terrorism. It now seems as though an American bio-defense researcher, with no apparent connection to al-Qaida or Islamic terrorism, was responsible for the anthrax attacks in 2001. Other non-religious terror groups have been busted recently within the U.S., for example, the RNC Welcoming Committee:
“The ‘Welcoming Committee’ is a criminal enterprise made up of 35 anarchists who are intent on
committing before and during the Republican National Convention,” said Sheriff Bob Fletcher in a statement. “These acts include tactics to blockade and disable delegate buses, breaching venue security and injuring police officers. They have recruited assistance in their criminal conspiracy from other anarchists groups throughout the country. Through their plans and actions they have exhibited a blatant disregard for the law and the safety of others.”
Some of the items found in the possession of the terrorists include:
- Large amounts of urine, including three to five gallon buckets of urine

- A machete, hatchet and several throwing knives
- Empty glass bottles
- Rags
- Flammable liquids
- Homemade caltrops (devises used to disable buses in roads)
- Metal pipes
- Axes
- Bolt cutters
- Sledge hammers
- Rapelling equipment
- Kryptonite locks
- Empty plastic buckets cut and made into shields
- Material for protective padding
Luckily, authorities have managed to confiscate these items before the RNC convention, but it is clear that terrorism is still an ideology that springs from, and needs to be combated on, many fronts, not just in religious doctrine that has been twisted and perverted. That said, like Sarah Palin welcoming Pat Buchanan to Alaska in 2000 despite her commitment to the Forbes campaign, I wish everyone a Happy Ramadan!
